The Importance of Supplements and Why We Partner with dotFIT

"From womb to tomb"

This is popular saying used in many different contexts. One context we like to use it in is nutritional supplementation. One of the first recommendations a doctor will make to a newly expecting mother is a prenatal vitamin. This is because we know that the average western diet is a bit lacking in nutritional content. Once the child is born we have two options as parents, one is to feed them breast milk which carries the nutrients the mother has been taking. The other is to feed them formula, which is fortified with all the additional nutrients necessary. 

At some point as we switch from milks, to food for toddlers (which tends to be fortified with additional vitamins and minerals) and into regular food we stop looking at the nutritional content of food. Never adjusting our diets and never adding supplementation. 


The Supplement Industry

Many people make the honest decision to add supplementation regimens into their diet. Unfortunately, not every supplement company is honest. The FDA does not regulate the supplement industry and therefore we are left at the mercy of companies who use trendy marketing and low quality ingredients in order to maximize their profit. In 2019, of the 598 supplement manufacturing facilities the FDA was able to inspect, over 50% were issued violations. 

However, there are a few companies out there that do regulate supplements. NSF Certified for Sport will regulate supplements from companies willing to work with them, the supplement brand, dotFIT, being an example.
